Sciatica Treatment with Chiropractic

Written By Hope Chiropractic on February 8, 2019

If you suffer from sciatica pain, you know that sometimes the pain can be excruciating. One moment you may feel fine, the next moment it may be difficult to stand and even harder to stay seated.

Sciatica can flare up when you're doing nothing at all, or when you're out trying to enjoy the St. Croix river and all its surrounding beauty.

What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a pain that is caused by the compression of the spinal nerve, right at the root. It is a pain that generally affects the lower back since that's where it radiates from. It can, and often does, extend through the entire back, the hips, and the legs.

Most often, sciatica is caused by degeneration of spinal disks. However, it can be caused because of injuries as well.

How Chiropractic Helps with Sciatica Treatment

Sciatica pain, once diagnosed, needs treatment. This is not an ailment that will go away on its own, even if you're not constantly experiencing pain. The pain from this compression of spinal nerves can come and go.

Chiropractic sciatica treatment can help ease the pain on its own, and studies have shown that it works well as a complementary therapy. Spinal manipulation helps do more than just relieve pain – it also realigns your spine, which can potentially treat the pain instead of just temporarily relieving it.

There are medications that can help with the pain, and surgery is always a final option when nothing else helps with your sciatica. Physical therapy is also often recommended, in place of or after surgery. However, chiropractic care is a natural treatment option and should generally be tried first.

Along with specialized adjustments, here are some of the other treatments that work well with chiropractic care:

Acupuncture

Acupuncture uses fine filaments (like needles) inserted along the body's meridians to relieve pain, including nerve pain.

Massage

Massage therapy increases circulation, removes pain, and decreases inflammation. These are all things that help with sciatica pain.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound uses sound waves to create pain relieving heat.

Cold Therapy

Cold therapy also helps to reduce inflammation.
